Dreaming of working from your couch in your pajamas? Yeah, me too. But a new study says landing that remote gig might be tougher than you thought.

Remember back in 2020? It seemed like everyone was working from home. But things have changed. A recent LinkedIn survey shows remote work in the U. S. has dropped a lot since then.

Imagine a pizza. Back then, remote workers had almost half the pie. Now? They’re down to about a quarter. More people are back in the office, or doing a mix of both.

    What’s Going On?

Why the shift? Well, for starters, remote job postings are down. Less jobs, more competition. It’s like trying to find a parking spot at the mall on Christmas Eve. Not fun.

And it’s not just remote jobs. The whole job market feels…stuck. A recent Harris Poll found that most Americans think it would be hard to find a better job than the one they have now. Ouch.

It gets worse. Three out of four people feel like employers have the upper hand. Almost half feel stuck in their current jobs. No room to grow? No thanks.

    The Numbers Don’t Lie

The hiring rate is low. Job openings are down. And get this: More Americans than ever are working multiple jobs just to make ends meet. That’s almost nine million people!

One economist called the U. S. labor market “frozen, but robust. ” Basically, companies are being careful. They’re not hiring a lot, but they’re not laying people off either. It’s a weird spot to be in.

What Does This Mean for You?

If you’re looking for a remote job, don’t give up. But maybe be prepared for a bit of a fight. It’s a tough market out there. Polish up that resume. Practice your interview skills. And good luck!
